Ted played football, two years on the junior varsity team and two years on the varsity team, and was a varsity wrestler for three years. He was also active in FFA. After high school, he served in the United States Marine Corps from 1970 to 1974. He is buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno.
